What is Islamic studies?
Islam is practised not just in every nation between Morocco and Indonesia and all points in between, but also throughout a large portion of Africa, and more lately, in Europe and America. In Brazil, there are Lebanese Muslim communities, while in northwest Scotland, there are Pakistanis who speak Gaelic. And the world's fastest-growing religion is Islam. Given that there are 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide, it makes sense to strive to learn as much as possible about them.
Islamic studies is a field of study that aims to explain the historical accomplishments and prospects of the Islamic world. It is taught in the west. It has a truly rich past. The biggest empire the world has ever known was founded by Arab conquests in 732, one hundred years after the passing of the Prophet Muhammad. It stretched from central France to China's borders. The Islamic religion and Arabic, the language of the Qur'an, kept it together. The tales of the Thousand and One Nights depict the opulent world of the ninth-century Abbasid court, whose capital, Baghdad, rivalled Rome. The House of Wisdom, an university built here by the caliphs, served as a translation hub where Arabic translations of the greatest works of Greco-Roman, Persian, and Indian civilization in philosophy, literature, mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and other fields were prepared (later also in Toledo, Spain).
The study of the languages spoken in that region as well as Islam as a religion and practical living manual form the core of the field of Islamic studies. This necessitates a thorough examination of the Qur'an and Muhammad's sayings. The functioning of Islamic law, Sufism (Islamic mysticism), political philosophy, the major sectarian divisions of the faith (Sunnis and Shi'ites), Arab, Persian, and Turkish literature, and the position of women are only a few of the broad viewpoints that are open to us beyond that. Islamic architecture, such as the Alhambra and Taj Mahal, created carpets, fine porcelain, priceless miniature paintings, and other works of art. Students learn about the rise of Islam and the life of the Prophet Muhammad before proceeding through the entirety of Islamic history as it is recorded by its own chroniclers.
The British Academy supports study into all of the aforementioned subjects as well as many more, wherever it is conducted - at colleges, museums, and other institutions. Using words with Arabic roots as admiral, mattress, alcohol, coffee, sugar, oranges and lemons, algebra, logarithm, cotton, magazine, and kebab, this Muslim civilization made its mark on the languages of Europe. Over a hundred stars in the sky have names in Arabic. We must do all in our power to better understand Muslims, including their religion and way of life.
